The soil (surface humus layer) compartment can fix 1 ? 2 t/ha of organic matter annually, depending on the species stand composition, site conditions and also on the ameliorative treatments. Conifers fix generally more carbon dioxide, comparing to broad-leaved species, with some exceptions. Alder stands in appropriate site conditions, supported by liming and fertilizing, sequester more carbon in humus form compared to conifer tree species on the same locality.
