Garden in the Czech Republic: the oldest grassland fertilizer experiment in the world

  • Original language description

In July 2006, grass garden was investigated near Luční challet in the Giant. Mts. The aim of the work was to study long-term residual effect of fertilization on grassland ecosystem functioning. Grass garden was fertilized by manure and wood ash at leastfor 200 years, surrounding control grasslands were never fertilized. Fertilization and cutting management was terminated in 1944. Significant effect of fertilization on the floristic composition, Ca soil concentration, and concentration of P and Mg in the aboveground biomass was detected. In fertilised treatment, Deschampsia cespitosa and Avenella flexuosa were dominant species whereas Nardus stricta was dominant in control. Long-term (more than 60 years) residual effect of organic fertilisation on ecosystem functioning can be detected even in sub-alpine conditions where nutrient poor podzols are developed.
