Anthelmintic Efficacy of Praziquantel against the Tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata in Equids

  • Original language description

The activity of a praziquantel was evaluated against Anoplocephala perfoliata in 32 naturally infected horses. Faecal samples from a number of horses, suspected of harbouring tapeworms were examined for the presence of tapeworm eggs using the centrifugation/flotation method. Seven horses (21,87 %), mares and yearlings, were identified with tapeworm eggs present in the faeces. All animals were treated intraorally with praziquantel at dose 1,5 mg/kg. This is highly effective in eliminating Anoplocephala perfoliata infections and all animals were cestode-free on 21.DPI (day post infection). Toxicosis was not evident in any of the horses post treatment. Up-to-date combinations, praziquantel and other macrocyclic lactons (ivermectin or moxidectin), will make it possible to integrate tapeworm removal into overall equine parasite control programs for treatment of nematodes, cestodes and bots in equids.
