Ways of exploiting breed differences in beef production were analysed. Selection within breeds and grading-up the flocks to superior breeds. The choice of the breed (breed introduction or substitution) that best matches the system requirements. It represents an efficient mean of improving total productivity because of the high genetic determinism of breed differences. Systematic crossbreeding to utilize breed differences, heterosis as well as complementarity between dam and terminal sire breeds. Crossing of breeds to form synthetic (composite) breeds with subsequent inter se mating within the new breed.
