... and the Chinese Cliffts Emerged out of the Mist, Perception and Image of China in Early Photographs
Original language description
The book deals with the image of China and its characteristic facts as portrayed in the 19th century photographs or illustrations published in illustrated magazines and books of that time. It explores in detail the changes in illustrations resulting fromthe use of new media of photography and its new role it played as a starting point for more elaborate and accurate illustration. Apart from that, the authors of the book focus on diaries and travel books which enjoyed immense popularity in the 19th century and which brought about further knowledge of the mentioned field. Some parts of the book are devoted to the development of photography as art media and to taking pictures in open Chinese ports or other significant Chinese places, both of which are mainly connected to growing number of Europeans and Americans who travelled to China, not only on business. The book is accompanied with a catalogue of photos from Erwin Dubský` s and Heinrich Wawra` s collections.
