Material Moods.
Original language description
The project Material Moods seeks the intersection of materials and algorithms. By applying the algorithmic logic on different material groups, it reveals a new perspective of materiality in architecture. The internal and external processes leading to material shapes are seen as generative and recursive algorithms, able to perform tasks and solve problems. By influencing the processes leading to material forms it is possible to influence the behaviour of materials and thus the resulting shapes, forms and performances. The unstable and unpredictable character of materials emergent properties lead to new, surprising results. The project Material Moods explores how designers can approach concepts of variability and adaptability, fluidity and unpredictability through their work. By investigating the topics that are especially resonant within today’s society, the various ways in which we can understand material logic through digital media are uncovered. As generative algorithms surprise us with their solutions, so do materials, creating material moods.
