Elite Place for the Masses: Prague Castle and its Role in a Legitimisation of Socialist Rule in Czechoslo-vakia (1948–1968) by Veronika Rollová opens the section dealing with communist state and its approach to architectural heritage. The article outlines the efforts to support the legitimacy of the communist rule through the use of the symbolic potential of Prague Castle – the traditi-onal seat of power of the Czech lands. Initially, it was used as president and 1st Chairman of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia Klement Gottwald’s official residence and a place of state representation. Despite the doctrine of Socialist Realism, renovation works designed before the war, in a style officially rejected as cosmopolitan and formalist, continued. At the time, the Castle was closed to the public despite proclamations that in the new Socialist era it belongs to the people of Czechoslovakia. The idea of opening it to the masses began to take shape in the post-Stalinist period. The Castle complex was redesigned to accommodate the House of Czechoslovak Children, Palace of Work, Picture Gallery, and Monument of the His-tory of Czechoslovak People. It was to become a socialist public space, representing both, the great past and the communist future of Czechoslovakia.
