    The Modification of Copper Electrocatalytic Activity for the Nitrate Reduction by Alloying with Tin

    The nitrates are serious pollutants especially in water, where it gets mainly due to the intensive agriculture. Presented work is focused on the electrochemical way of nitrate removal. In this area the best results for weakly alkaline solutions were achieved using the copper cathode. But the disadvantage of this arrangement is that the nitrate is converted to ammonium, what disqualify this process slightly. The aim of presented work was to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of copper by alloying withtin, which performs different mechanism of nitrate reduction from that of copper. Other goal was to determine the influence of the material composition on the mechanism of the nitrate reduction and to investigate the possibility of changing the selectivity to the final product.The enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity of copper by alloying with tin was observed only in composition region up to 10 wt. % of tin.
