Molecular dynamics and silicate glass - mutual challenges
Original language description
Molecular dynamics (MD) has become in the last thirty years a standard experimental/theoretical method in glass science. The need for new potentials is stressed, based on quantum calculations, required for better understanding of their role in MD. A keyto tailoring glass properties has to be sought in the medium range order of the silicate structure. Although MD produces a structure close to the experimental one, the phase transition found in by this method needs to be studied in detail to understand what is really being observed. It is suggested that a critical cooling rate for the glass transition exists, above which only an amorphous solid and not a glass is formed.
