The Poisson ratio of porous materials
Original language description
According to classical continuum mechanics the Poisson ratio can be calculated via standard elasticity relations from two measured moduli or ultrasonic velocities. However, it is a long-standing problem of materials science to correctly predict the porosity dependence of the effective Poisson ratio of porous materials. In this contribution the different attempts to solve this problem are reviewed and a new solution is proposed. In particular, we compare the Poisson ratio prediction using three differentrelations: the linear non-interaction approximation, the Phani-Niyogi power-law relation, as well as two relations recently proposed by the authors (an exponential relation and an extended Coble-Kingery type relation). It is found that using our exponential relation the Poisson ratio prediction seems to be the most realistic. In contrast to the other alternatives it is in relatively good accordance with a large amount of literature data and ? supporting the ideas of several other author
