EFFECTIVE PROPERTIES OF CERAMIC-MATRIX COMPOSITES
Original language description
Rigorous micromechanical bounds are recalled for conductivity, permittivity, and elastic moduli, and applied to estimate the effective properties of ceramic-matrix composites, with a special focus on alumina-zirconia composites. A simple empirical weighting procedure is proposed, which adequately describes the typical S-shape of many property-composition curves. Other relations are mentioned (Bruggeman-Landauer, power-law, exponential), and the effects of inclusion anisometry, orientation, contact and overlap are briefly discussed. The volume-weighted averages of the bounds provide remarkably good estimates of many published data. Many effective properties of ceramic-matrix composites are satisfactorily estimated by the volume-weighted averages of thebounds and, for porous materials, by the exponential relation. Anisometric inclusions (and their preferential orientation) shift the effective properties away from the sphere predictions, while contact or overlap of low-property-value inc
