For successful PEM reactor operation is important the so-called three-phase contact, where gas phase, ionic conductive phase and electric conductive phase are connected. Catalyst and its support serve as electrically conductive matter. Optimal catalyst support must fulfill several requirements: high surface area; high electric conductivity; sufficient chemical stability and should not form compounds which can poison electrode reactions or membrane. Currently only carbon black based materials are used. Beside favorable price they exhibit high surface area together with sufficient electric conductivity. One of the significant problem represent resistance of carbon catalyst support towards oxidative environment. Lose of contact between catalyst particle and carbon support causes inactivity of this catalytic site and finally it leads to performance drop.
