Recovery of Lithium and Rubidium from Low Grade Czech Zinnwaldite
Original language description
Lithium and rubidium were separated from leach liquors originated from processing zinnwaldite concentrate with 1.36% Li and 0.94% Rb using lime stone method. This concentrate was prepared from zinnwaldite wastes (0.21% Li, 0.20% Rb) originating from dressing Sn-W ores, which were heavily mined in the past in the Czech Republic. Two methods of lithium extraction from hydroxide leach liquors were investigated: precipitation of Li2CO3 with gaseous CO2 and liquid-liquid extraction with LIX54 and TOPO. Carbonate precipitation provides ca. 75% yield of Li in the form of Li2CO3 with an average purity of 94%. Liquid-liquid extraction enables 96% yield of Li in the form of Li2SO4 solution, a suitable intermediate for precipitation of Li2CO3 with 99% purity. Rubidium can be precipitated from refined solutions after Li separation as RbAl(SO4)2.12H2O, a suitable intermediate for Rb2CO3 production.
