Porous alumina-zirconia composite ceramics prepared by starch consolidation casting
Original language description
Starch consolidation casting is used to prepare alumina-zirconia composite ceramics based on submicron Al2O3 (Sumitomo AA04) with additions of yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (Tosoh TZ-3Y) in weight percentages of 10 and 40 wt.%, respectively, and varying amountsof pore-formers (corn starch) in the range 10-50 vol.% (related to solids). The composites are characterized via bulk density, porosity (26-51 %), shrinkage (16-22 %) and elastic properties via the resonant frequency technique. The dependence of Young'smoduli on porosity is discussed in view of micromechanical relations; it is found that the Young's moduli closely follow an exponential relation.
