Polybrominated diphenyl ethers - design and validation of model for photodegradation

  • Original language description

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) were widely used as flame retardants in plastics. In less developed countries the PBDE are presently still in use. However, the PBDE spontaneously released from plastics can contaminate the environment and because oftheir persistence they accumulate in the environment. Due to distinct similarity of PBDE to the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), the PBDE present a potential health hazard. Presented study predict ways of PBDE degradation using photodegradation. Thermodynamic properties of all congeners were evaluated for predicting the degradation behavior. These properties were in this study by quantum-chemical calculations, using a semi-empirical method AM1. The PBDE properties from the quantum-chemical calculationwere also used to predict the wavelength of maximum absorbance, the octanol-water distribution coefficient and the gas chromatography retention times of all PBDE congeners.
