Inorganic compounds used as preservatives and their influence on wood damage
Original language description
Nowadays many chemicals are used very often as preservatives for wood protection against biological agents and fire. Regardless knowledge of potential wood corrosion caused by the preservatives is not still sufficient. Therefore an influence of boric acid, sodium tetraborite, copper and zinc sulphates on the wood was studied in condition of accelerated aging to expose a potential risk for wood in its long-term exposition. Wooden samples were impregnated three times under reduced pressure by 5 wt% solutions of the chosen chemicals. After that the samples were exposed to accelerated ageing in dry (temperature 70°C) and wet (temperature 70°C and relative humidity 80 %) conditions for 30 days. Changes in the wood structure were studied by electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and by pH value measurement. The study of the wood structure impregnated wood have shown that wood corrosion occurs under the influence of all studied chemicals after the exposure to the conditions of accelerate
