The porosity dependence of thermal conductivity
Original language description
Important tools for estimating the porosity dependence of the thermal conductivity are recalled and their application to refractories is indicated. It is shown that the Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) upper bound provides a rigorous limit that cannot be exceeded by any conductivity value, as long as the material's microstructure is isotropic. Moreover, for pores of approximately isometric shape all admissible model relations should reduce to the linear approximation with a coefficient 3/2 in the limit of low porosities. When the relative Young's modulus is accessible from measured data, a cross-property relation can be invoked to predict relative conductivity. After measuring thermal conductivity data, a one-parameter relation can be used for fitting. Using these tools it is possible to estimate the thermal conductivity of porous refractories, when phase volume fraction information is available (e.g. from XRD) and the temperature dependence of the phase conductivities is known.
