Preparation of clay mineral polymer nanocomposites by adsorption in solution
Original language description
The preparation of nanocomposites composed of a polymer and a layered silicate was studied by exfoliation adsorption. A series of polyesteramides prepared by an anionic copolymerization of ? caprolactam and ? caprolactone containing 20 - 100 mol % ? caprolactone units was used as a polymer matrix. Cloisite 30B and Cloisite 25A were used as fillers. Exfoliation/intercalation of the filler within the polymer matrix depends on mutual interactions of the components, i.e., the polymer, the solvent, and the organophilized montmorillonite. The swelling of the silicates and polymer-solvent interactions were therefore studied in a series of solvents by WAXS method, respectively by measuring the limiting viscosity numbers. Only a few of the large number of composition combinations of the system copolymer-solvent-montmorillonite lead to a nanocomposite having fully or partially exfoliated structure.
