Alkaline water electrolysis with Nafion membrane

  • Original language description

With increasing interest for hydrogen as energy vector the electrolysis of water is intensively studied now. The possibility of using Nafion membrane as a separator in alkaline water electrolysis was investigated in this work. The hydroxide electrolyte preconcentration during electrolysis has been verified. Influence of temperature, initial concentration and current density to the energetic parameters and total concentration changes were studied. Also the effect of spacer inclusion to electrode chamberswas evaluated. It was found that the application of alkaline water electrolysis with Nafion membrane is feasible and hydroxide concentration occurs in cathodic chamber during electrolysis. It was found that the higher temperature positively influences the current density and with higher current density grows rate concentration change during electrolysis. The optimal value of potassium hydroxide concentration of was determined in range 15 - 25 % (wt.) in terms of energy parameters.
