Analyses of Art Noveau mosaics from the church of St. Simon and Juda in Dolín near Slaný and from Holovousy, both probably made by the workshop of Viktor Foerster, have shown that the author probably used the glass type Na2O-PbO-SiO2 and that he used thesame glass also for restoration of The Last Judgment mosaic at the Prague Castle in 1890-1910. Despite the fact that lead glasses are more durable than potassium glasses, the material investigations identified corrosion processes on the surface of the glass pieces (tesserae), which depended on their composition. Apart from the analyzed mosaic Na2O-PbO-SiO2 glasses, we also used ancient sodium glasses (Na2O-CaO-SiO2) and potassium glasses (K2O-CaO-SiO2) from archeological finds in Opava to demonstrate different chemical durability of those glasses.
