Effect of acid pickling on mechanical properties of high-strength steel
Original language description
Hydrogen forming during acid pickling can enter steel structure and change its mechanical properties. Both the bulk and the surface changes can have severe consequences, especially for steels used in power plant or aerial industry. The aim of this work was to describe the effect of acid pickling on mechanical properties of high strength steels. We used samples of 15-5PH - martensitic, precipitation-strengthened steel. We tested effect of different acid solutions (HCl/HCl + inhibitors) and varying conditions of pickling (cathodic polarization, skipping the annealing for hydrogen removal) on hydrogen diffusion coefficient, tensile and three-point bend transverse strength. The structure of fracture area was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The hydrogen diffusion coefficient value suggested that the hydrogen penetration was very shallow. The fractographical evaluation of the fracture area revealed presence of brittle fracture only in the surface area of the specimen. Ultimatel
