Gold nano-objects grafting on substrates for tissue and electronics engineering

  • Original language description

In this chapter, modification of the surfaces of glass and polymers by plasma discharge and subsequent grafting with different thiols (mercaptoethanol, cysteamine, biphenyldithiol and ethanedithiol) is discussed. Thiols are expected to be fixed via one of their functional groups -OH, -SH or -NH2 to reactive sites activated by the plasma treatment. The remaining -SH group is then allowed to interact with gold nanoobjects (nanoparticles or nanorods). The main goal of this study is to examine the effect ofthe plasma treatment and the thiol grafting on the binding of gold nanoobjects on the substrate surface. Gold nanoparticles and nanorods were characterized by TEM microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Surface chemistry and structure of polymers and glass(pristine, plasma modified and grafted) were studied by FTIR, UV-Vis and XPS spectroscopy and by electrokinetic analyses. Surface morphology of samples was examined by AFM microscopy. Finally, the adhesion and proliferation of cells was s
