Transparent Yb:YAG ceramics, layered in situ composites
Original language description
This work reports on the fabrication of transparent YAG ceramic architectures with controlled Yb content via spray drying, uniaxial pressing, cold isostatic pressing, and solid state reaction sintering in high vacuum with TEOS as a sintering additive. YAG samples with 0, 5 and 10 at.% Yb were prepared in this way, and their microstructure and optical transmittance were characterized. Further, the fabrication of a transparent ceramic sample with layers is shown. All samples were sintered to full densityand transparent quality. The prepared ceramics had homogeneous microstructure with grain sizes of about 30-50 microns and transmittances of 79-81 %. For the layered sample, a zone with an Yb concentration gradient in a thickness of less than 100 micronswas observed. The method allows the production of thin disk laser architectures.
