    Synthesis of intermetallic phases by mechanical alloying

  • Original language description

    Mechanical alloying is a process, where solid solutions or intermetallics are formed during high-energy ball milling. By this technique, ultrafine-grained powders can be obtained. When compacted by suitable technique that minimizes grain coarsening, high-strength alloys can be prepared. In this work, the possibility of the application of mechanical alloying in production of several technically important intermetallics (Fe-Al high-temperature alloys, Ni-Ti shape memory alloy and Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals) is presented. Spark Plasma Sintering was used as a compaction method. It was proved that this method is suitable for compaction of powders prepared by mechanical alloying, since it enables to save the ultrafine structure and obtaining of almost pore-freematerials.
