    Characterization of NiTi Shape Memory Alloy Prepared by Self-Sustainable High-Temperature Synthesis

    Microstructure of NiTi shape memory alloy prepared by Self-sustainable High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) under different conditions was characterized. Slow heating (20 °C.min-1) leads to a heterogeneous structure composed of various Ni-Ti phases and highporosity. The microstructure consisting of NiTi and Ti2Ni phases can be obtained by rapid heating (over 300 °C.min-1). Sufficient reactive sintering temperature to obtain NiTi phase is 900 °C. Further increase of the SHS initiation temperature to 1100 °Creduces porosity and the amount of the Ti2Ni phase. The lowest porosity and lowest amount of the undesirable Ti2Ni phase were achieved by utilization of coarse titanium powder (200-600 ?m) with fresh surface, produced by mechanical machining, or by theincrease of nickel content in the alloy. However, the change of the nickel content induced the formation of the Ni4Ti3 phase.
