Influence of ethanol addition on the microstructure of ceramic foams prepared by yeast-mediated biological foaming of alumina suspensions
Original language description
The influence of ethanol addition on the microstructure of ceramic foams prepared by yeast-mediated biological foaming of alumina suspensions is investigated, and two new process variants are proposed. It has been found that ethanol additions of more than 5 % have a significant effect on the (total) porosity and the pore size of cellular alumina. Porosities in the range 78-84 % can be readily achieved by this process without additional ethanol or with ethanol additions below 5 wt.%, whereas porosities in the range 46-76 % are obtained when the ethanol additions in the alumina suspensions are in the range 7.5-25 wt.%. That means, ethanol addition is an efficient tool for controlling the porosity of alumina foams and thus for tailoring the microstructure-sensitive properties. Apart from that, ethanol addition has a significant influence on the pore size. Mean pore sizes are in the range 0.7-1.4 mm for ethanol contents below 5 wt.%, but only approx. 0.5 mm for ethanol contents of 10 wt.%.
