Formation of alumina-containing alginate hydrogels via ionotropic gelation, dewatering kinetics and xerogel microstructure
Original language description
Alumina-containing alginate hydrogels with parallel arrays of highly anisometric capillary pores are prepared by ionotropic gelation of alumina-containing sodium alginate sols with calcium chloride solutions. By osmotic dewatering in polyethylene glycolsolutions and subsequent drying, xerogels are obtained, which are studied by microscopy, image analysis and mercury porosimetry. It has been shown that defect-free drying was possible via osmostic dewatering in polyethylene glycol solutions (PEG with molecular mass 8000 g/mol) and subsequent drying under ambient conditions at room temperature and stepwisely increased higher temperatures (40, 60, 80 and 105 °C). Using microscopic image analysis it has been found that in the hydrogels the pore size is significantly larger on the bottom part (201 +- 57 ?m) than on the top part (106 +- 24 ?m) of samples (slices), evidently due to a syneresis-like phenomenon that affects the top parts more because these are formed at an earlier stage of iono
