Porous hydroxyapatite ceramics prepared by dry powder pressing with sucrose and by suspension foaming techniques using wheat flour and other pore formers
Original language description
Porous hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with controlled microstructure have been prepared by uniaxial pressing of dry HA powders with a precisely size fraction of sucrose (400-600 ?m) as a pore former and pressing additive. Total porosities obtained after firing (800-1000 °C) powder compacts with 10-50 vol.% of sucrose are in the range 52-72 %, which indicates that a significant part of the porosity is not a result from sucrose burnout, but residual interstitial porosity between the primary nanocrystallineHA grains (crystallites) forming the matrix in which the large pores (mean chord length range determined via stereology-based image analysis approx. 400-800 ?m) are embedded. This has been confirmed by SEM and by mercury porosimetry. As expected, the strength of these materials is not very high (diametral compression strength { 1.2 MPa) and decreases significantly with increasing porosity. However, Young's moduli are in the range 1-11 GPa, i.e. very close to that of bone (2-20 GPa), so t
