Impact of different levels of relative humidity on cracking of modified alkoxysilane consolidant

  • Original language description

Although alkoxysilanes are the most frequently used consolidants, they crack after some time. Thus, they lose the ability to consolidate the stone monuments permanently. In our previous work, it was suggested that, under laboratory conditions, alkoxysilane consolidant modified with 10 wt. % SiO2 nanoparticles of 60 - 70 nm and consolidant modified with 5 wt. % SiO2 nanoparticles of 200-300 nm cracked less than the unmodified alkoxysilane consolidant. However, the consolidants have to work equally well under non-ideal conditions of outdoor environment. To get closer to outdoor conditions, several samples of modified consolidant and samples of an unmodified control were left at various relative humidity levels at 20°C and monitored during several weeks. After this time, all consolidants were compared with each other to set the influence of different relative humidity levels on cracking. By this comparison, we can suggest under which conditions it is possible to use the modified consolida
