The Development of the Chemical Composition of Czech Mosaic Glass from the Middle Ages to the Present

  • Original language description

This work is focused on the glass mosaic. The shape typology and different chemical composition of tesserae were monitored depending on the time of their creation. Chemical composition was determined by XRF method. Other observed parameters were opacity of glass and related opacifying particles. Antimony-based particles, fluorides, phosphates and other particles were found by XRD method. Damage of mosaic tesserae (extent and symptoms), associated especially with the resistance of the glass, is also evaluated in the work. As might be expected, glass with low chemical resistance, which suffers from the corrosive effect of the environment, is medieval glass (potassium-lime) from the Last Judgment Mosaic. An interesting case is the degradation and crumbling bulk of glass in layers. This damage is observed at mosaics produced in Bohemia during the 20th century. In contrast, prefabricated mosaic tesserae from 50s of 20th century, are not usually damaged in the bulk or surface of glass, but often occurs degradation of the hot-melt adhesive, which fused tesserae to the underlying aluminum plate.
