Microporous layer - a challenge or ded end research direction in a PEM water electrolysis?

  • Original language description

A PEM water electrolysis represents an inseparable part of the so called hydrogen economy scheme. It is characterised by a high process intensity, efficiency and flexibility. Moreover, it utilises only demineralised water as a reactant and circulating medium. It is, thus, safe from the point of view of system corrosion and dangerous chemicals handling. Therefore research in this direction has attracted attention of the research community for more than two decades. In spite of a significant advances and the fact that large capacity electrolytic units are already commercially available, the real breakthrough has not been reached yet. The material demands represent one of the most important factors in this negative situation. This represents an interesting aspect, if we consider that PEM water electrolysis is based on processes reversible to these taking place in the well-developed PEM fuel cells.
