Environmentally benign Prins cyclization for the preparation of 2-isobutyl-4-methyl-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol
Original language description
In this work the green and selective preparation of 2-isobutyl-4-methyl-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol (also called Florosa or Florol) was performed. The preparation was realized by Prins cyclization of isoprenol and isovaleraldehyde, as a catalyst heteropoly acids (phosphotungstic and phosphomolybdic) were used in homogeneous and also in heterogeneous arrangement. The only solvent necessary for the reaction was water that enables the increase of the selectivity to desired product by hydrolysis of catalyst-carbocation intermediate. The use of heteropolyacids anchored on the MCM-41 also in the water media was even more successful from the point of view of selectivity (96 %) and the catalyst may be reused without loss of activity and selectivity at least four times. The heterogenization of HPAs was performed also in the water.
