Development of power management and air treatment system for PEM fuel cell based mobile APU
Original language description
Modern civilization uses numerous electronic devices to make its live easier. Although their power consumption dramatically decreased within the last decades, a number of installations and demands on their performance are continuously growing. For all such services cut off of the energy supply, or providing mobile, long lasting and reliable energy supply for outdoor activities, represents an important issue. PEM fuel cell stack based mobile APU represents promising solution of this problem. Its main advantages are high flexibility and efficiency, high process intensity, instantaneous “recharging” and absence of moving parts. Products of reactions taking place in fuel cells are electric energy, heat and water exclusively. This allows application of this technology also in areas sensitive to exhalations. Typical medial bead with diagnostic, rescue and live support devices, have long-time energy consumption in range 100-150 W, up-to 300 W in peak. Another example represents mobile base of rescue, fireguards or police units. All these installations represent dynamic loads. Fuel cell, however, shall preferably be operated at a constant load. This is reason, why power management is necessary. Li-ion accumulators represent suitable option to solve this task. It is due to their low weight and high flexibility. Main drawbacks consist in limited range of current loads it can accept/provide, especially at the low temperature, typically bellow 10 °C. Supercapacitors offer an alternative. Nevertheless, they are characterized, in comparison to Li ion accumulators, by lower power weight density and rapid self discharge.
