Design modular filter for treatment of air used as oxidant in mobile APU based on PEM fuel cell

  • Original language description

PEM type of fuel cells represent promising technology for efficient conversion of chemical energy of fuel into electrical energy. They have several important advantages as high efficiency, flexibility, process intensity, nontoxic reaction products and silent operation. Silent operation is caused by fact, that fuel cells doesn’t have any moving parts instead of combustion engines. Only ventilators for air supply and valves are sources of noise in this devices. Product of reaction is only pure water and like beside product heat. This fact allows application of fuel cells also in areas sensitive to exhalations, e.g. mobile medical beds or in field hospitals. Other potential applications represents power source for speleologist, rescue operations in old mines or outlying areas, or reserve power source for firefighters and police. Mobile PEM fuel cell unit can also be used as temporary power source for telecommunication transmitters or meteorological stations. All these applications required construction of suitable mobile system for PEM fuel cell stacks. Power consumption of electronic devices, e.g. lights, walkie-talkie, cellular phones, GPS, notebooks, rescue devices for medicine, dramatically decreased in last decades, but their importance, number of installations and demands on their performance still growing. APU weight should not exceed 15 kg limit. It represent upper weight limit of the entire system, excluding pressurized gas cylinders. Logical solution is to use ambient air as an oxidant in order to reduce complexity of the system. Main problem in this case represents impurities presented in air, which can reduce lifetime of fuel cell. Solid impurities like dust or pollen can deposit on cathode surface and in combination with produced water form a sludge blocking distribution channels and gas distribution layers of the fuel cell.
