Composite photocatalyst based on TiO2- active carbon
Original language description
Composite photocatalysts based on TiO2 - active carbon (AC) are promising materials for pollutant removal due to the combination of high adsorption ability of AC and photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the TiO2/AC fraction on the photocatalytic efficiency of pollutant removal in gaseous (using standard ISO methods) and liquid phase. It was observed that the composite photocatalyst TiO2-AC exhibits a synergistic increase of pollutant removing ability which can be demonstrated on removal of NOx from the gaseous phase. In the case of pure TiO2, under UV irradiation the concentration of inlet NO decreases but the concentration of NO2 (in fact more toxic than the initial NO) increases. This is caused by the accumulation of HNO3 on the surface of TiO2 which reacts with NO to NO2. Composites TiO2-AC exhibit much higher resistance to nitric acid accumulation compared to pure TiO2 due to the significantly higher surface area (460 m2/g) in relation to pure TiO2 (45 m2/g).
