Unusual morphology of bent-core liquid crystals with an aryl unit in the terminal position.
Original language description
Bent-core liquid crystals with naphthalene central unit and an aromatic ring at terminal position of molecular tails were synthesised with the aim to enhance nanosegregation. We have found that the length of the spacer between rigid core and terminal aromatic moiety had profound influence on the liquid crystal polymorphism. The homologues with short spacers exhibited nematic and columnar phases, while for the longest homologue a tilted lamellar phase with liquid-like in-plane order and unusual morphology of densely packed toroidal-objects was observed.
