WO3 photoanodes prepared by spray pyrolysis for photo-electrochemical water splitting

  • Original language description

The present work deals with the fabrication of WO3 films by spray-pyrolysis, their characterization by XRD and SEM and evaluation of photoelectrochemical properties. Spray pyrolysis was done by semi-automatic spray device consisting of a compressed air fed spray nozzle. Gravity fed liquid precursors, namely i) Acetylated peroxotungstic acid (AcPTA), ii) Ammonium paratungstate (APT) and iii) Ammonium metatungtate (AMT), were sprayed on heated FTO glass substrate. Various deposited amount (layer thickness) of WO3 on FTO has been achieved by the repetition of spraying cycles (SC). Spray-pyrolysis of AcPTA produces homogeneous WO3 layers with high photocurrents. However, with increasing amount of deposited WO3, adhesion decreases and part of the layer may even peel off. Spray-pyrolysis of APT produces layers with very good mechanical properties but lower photocurrents in comparison with AcPTA layers. WO3 fabricated from AMT exhibit very promising photocurrents which increase with number of SC and will be further optimised in future work.
