PEM fuel cells stack assembly and important components

  • Original language description

PEM type fuel cells represent a promising device for efficient conversion of chemical energy carried by fuel (hydrogen) into energy electrical. They possess several important advantages as, high efficiency, high flexibility or absence of moving parts. The main application of this type of fuel cell is nowadays foreseen in car propulsion or in other mobile applications. Fuel cell composed from anode, membrane as polymer electrolyte and cathode put maximal potential 1.223 V, which is so low for electronic devices. Fuel cells are arranged into stacks for increasing maximal operation potential. Bipolar electrode is new component in stack, which is represents anode and cathode in one component. Bipolar electrodes have to be made of material with high chemical resistance and low ohmic resistivity. Chemical resistance is necessary, because on side of electrode is in contact with hydrogen and second with oxygen. Low permeability of electrode material is although necessary due the safety point of view. Low ohmic resistivity is necessary due the low loses of energy. Both sides of bipolar electrode are provided by gas distribution channels for distribution of fuel and oxidation agent. Construction of bipolar electrode have to allow sealing and isolation of individual electrodes in stack. Membranes so thin as is possible are used in fuel cell. These membranes allow high current densities and minimization of ohmic loses. One of disadvantages of thin membranes is low mechanical stability and tendency for rolling. Both problems is possible to solve by using fixation frame, from polymer which is adequate thin and chemical resist. Electrodes can be based on carbon cloth or carbon paper with catalytic layer. Electrodes based on carbon cloth are thicker than electrodes based on carbon cloth. It’s problem by assembling, because electrodes can damaged thin membrane. At the other hand electrodes based on carbon paper have problem with low diffusivity for both gases, water management and electric contact between bipolar electrode and membrane.
