Light scattering and absorption by inclusions in transparent spinel ceramics

  • Original language description

The optical properties of transparent ceramics are generally affected by inclusions. When the indices of refraction of matrix and inclusions are not close to each other, the in-line transmittance can drop dramatically. In particular, empty or gas-filled pores are typical inclusions in all ceramics and cause a major decrease of the in-line transmittance. Low porosity in ceramics may be achieved by ECAS method (Electric Current Assisted Sintering), also known as SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering). However, carbon inclusions, caused by the usage of graphite molds in this method, decrease the transmittance as well. The aim of this work is to compare the effects of several factors on the in-line transmittance of transparent spinel (MgAl2O4) ceramics: concentration, size, composition and absorption of inclusions, and the wavelength of incident light. With this background knowledge the effort in the development of new transparent spinel ceramics via ECAS method may be even more focused. The impact on in-line transmittance of these absorbing (graphite and amorphous carbon) and non-absorbing (pore) inclusions in spinel matrix has been thoroughly investigated via Mie scattering theory for multiple wavelengths of incident light, inclusion diameters and concentrations. Furthermore the influence of the distribution of inclusion size has been discussed. It is found that some general trends exist and they are linked to the absolute value of the difference between the indices of refraction of inclusions and matrix.
