Possible use of Miscanthus ash as an active mineral admixture in composite materials for construction use

  • Original language description

We would like to demonstrate that biomass ashes from potential energy crop Miscanthus can be used for fabrication of construction composites. It was shown, that biomass-based ashes contained two different components: black crystalline ash and grey highly-amorphous sintered agglomerates. Both components were separated, and their chemical composition was analysed using X-ray fluorescence and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The phase composition was analysed by X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the thermal stability was analysed using simultaneous thermal analysis. The pozzolanic activity of the examined ashes was analysed using Chapelle test. As both analysed ashes exhibited high pozzolanic activity, they can be classified as active mineral admixtures representing economically and environmentally interesting alternative to traditional pozzolans used in construction industry for manufacturing cement, lime and alkali activated alumino-silicate composites. © 2019 Czech Environment Management Center.
