Electro-optic glass based on antimony and silver doped PbO-Bi2O3-Ga2O3 system – electro-optic characterization

  • Original language description

Light modulators are important for processing of optical signals, for example in free space communications. For the construction of robust and fast electro-optic modulators of VIS and NIR light, the most important component is an optical material with a sufficiently high electro-optic coefficient. As suitable and cost-effective material, heavy-metal glasses were developed based on a PbO-Bi2O3-Ga2O3 system. The glasses were melted at 1000 °C for 65 min. The thermal properties of the prepared materials were investigated using differential thermal analysis. The optical properties were characterized using optical spectroscopy in UV-VIS-IR region of spectrum. The glasses are transparent from 500 nm up to 7 µm. The M-line spectroscopy indicated the maximal refractive index to be 2.49 at 473 nm. The electro-optic coefficient was calculated from the rotation angle of polarized light passing through the sample on which a high voltage from 5 to 30 kV was applied. The obtained values of electro-optical coefficient are suitable for construction of a robust intensity or phase modulators based on electro-optic effect in this type of glasses.
