Kinetic and spectroscopic aspects of hypervalent iodine oxidants synthesis

  • Original language description

Numerous hypervalent iodine compounds are popular oxidants often used in organic synthesis. This is given by their ability to selectively oxidize wide range of compounds (e.g. alcohols to carbonyl compounds) and their unique metal free and non toxic nature [1,2]. Synthesis of these compounds is based on application of peroxoacids representing serious safety issues during production of these compounds on a larger scale. Consequently, the use of hypervalent iodine compounds is limited to laboratory scale. Aim of this work is to facilitate larger scale generation of these compounds. Therefore, we introduced anodic oxidation route for the synthesis of the most popular hypervalent iodine compounds (2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX), 2-iodosobenzoic acid (2-IsBA), and (diacetoxyiodo)benzene and its derivatives) on boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The principle of electrochemical synthesis of IBX and 2 IsBA from 2-iodobenzoic acid (2-IBA) in aqueous solution already was reported in our recent communication [3]. Synthesis of other useful iodine oxidants, the electrochemical kinetics and spectroscopic study of 2-IBA and 2-IsBA anodic oxidation in aqueous and non aqueous environment will be discussed in the present contribution.
