This work deals with the modification of TiO2 photocatalyst by various overlayers containing CeO2 with aim to increase surface hydrophobicity and thus enhance photocatalytic removal of persistent non-polar compounds. The deposition of thin layers of CeO2 by spray pyrolysis over the particulate TiO2 photocatalyst layer improves the mechanical stability, however photoactivity is much lower than original layers of pure TiO2. Modification of particulate TiO2 photocatalyst layer by overlayer based on colloidal SiO2, TEOS, TiO2 particles and different cerium precursors was more promising. Such overlayers significantly improved the mechanical properties of the resulting coating and at the same time increase photocatalytic activity of non-polar herbicide monuron about 40%.
