Influence of water electrolyser type on hydrogen production from renewable power sources
Original language description
Hydrogen plays a crucial role in decrease of dependence on fossil fuels. To keep current living standards, the transformation of all sectors of societyis necessary. Massive increase of renewable power sources capacity raises theproblem of their inconsistent production. The transformation of renewable electricenergy to renewable hydrogen is an effective solution. Renewable hydrogen canparticipate in decarbonisation of industry, household sector and transportation.Water electrolysis is thus an essential process for renewable hydrogen production. There are four types of water electrolysis known but not all of them are suitable forcombination with unstable power source. The most flexible type is the waterelectrolysis with proton exchange membrane (PEM). New type of alkaline waterelectrolysis with anion selective membrane also shows promising results. The mathematical model considering the operating parameters of commercialelectrolysers in combination with photovoltaic power plant was created. It can beused to predict behavior of an electrolyser in dependence on the operatingconditions and power supply. The relation between the minimum operatingrequirements and the power output of the unstable source of energy must beassessed to estimate the electrolyser size and thus rated power. Then, the maximalutilization of both the produced electricity and the electrolyser should beeconomically desirable. For final decision of optimized electrolyser size and typethe investment cost should be also considered. It was found that electrolyser operates frequently at low power and significantdifferences in electrolyser size brings only small differences in total hydrogenproduced. The operation range of electrolyser plays an important role. It is closelyconnected with ability to utilize low energy production from photovoltaic powerplant.Acknowledgment:This work was supported from the grant of Specific university research – grantNo. A2_FCHT_2022_001.
