Study of Decorative Layers on Various Types of Tiles Found in Hradčany Palaces (Prague, Czech Republic)

  • Original language description

The results of research on the glazes, colouring components and ceramic bodies of ten glazed tiles or their fragments are presented in this paper. The large-format ceramic tiles were retrieved during an archaeological excavation in Schwarzenberg Palace (Prague, Czech Republic) and are dated to the second third of the 16th century. The other types of stove tiles are dated to a later period and are archaeological finds mainly from Salm Palace. The main aim of the study was to determine the type of surface treatment (glazes, engobe, and secondary paintings) and the colourants in coloured layers and glazes. Another goal was to determine the source of the observed defects – crazing and flaking. The investigation was carried out using a combination of instrumental techniques (X-ray methods, Raman spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, optical microscopy and elemental SEM-EDS analysis). The presence of PbO was in the wide range of about 30–60 wt%, and colour-forming copper, iron, cobalt, antimony and manganese ions as well as yellow pigments, especially from the Pb-Sb, Pb-Sn and Pb-Sb-Sn systems, were identified. The different saturation and opacity of the green glaze in the monochromatic relief were achieved by varying the concentration of the Sn component in the glaze.
