Contamination band in Raman spectra of glass recorded under vacuum conditions
Original language description
Raman spectra of glass revealed the systematic appearance of the contamination band related to carbon molecules deposited on the surface, when recorded in vacuum. It is demonstrated that the band diminishes with increasing pressure in the vacuum chamber. The existence and the intensity of the contamination band depend on the time of laser irradiation; an incubation time in band formation is observed. Other materials were measured, and it is apparent the existence of the contamination band in Raman spectra is material dependent. A simple model explaining the experimental findings, based on the competition between carbon and non-carbon molecules in surface adsorption, is suggested.
