Mullite is a key component of many ceramics and ceramic composites, including mullite-basedrefractories, the existence of anomalies in the temperature dependence of many properties,including elastic properties and damping, is a particularly interesting topic in current mulliteresearch, because they may be indicative of phase transitions. This contribution on porousalumina-mullite composites presents new results on this topic. Using temperature-dependentimpulse excitation, it is shown that Young’s modulus and damping generally exhibit ananomaly at around 1000 °C and, for mullite-rich compositions, another anomaly at around 300°C.
