Viscosity versus activated sludge and biological foam

  • Original language description

The paper is aimed at the studies of biological foams and activated sludge properties. The relations among apparent equilibrium viscosity, concentration of suspended solids and surface charge carried by the component particles were found. Influence of both antifoamer and enzymatic agent on viscosity of activated sludge and foams was revealed. Obtained results showed that there is a relationship between sludge viscosity and surface charge and it could be associated with surface chemistry of bacterial cells. Viscosity was reduced by the bioagents addition but the effect depended on their type, structure and activated sludge and biological foam composition. Viscosity of foams and sludge increased with the increasing value of suspended solids concentration. This relation had a linear or exponential character. Measurement of rheological properties of biological foams and activated sludge was affected by relatively small viscosity, relatively high suspended solids concentration and tendency
