Environmental impact of landfilling in Czech Republic assessed using LCA method

  • Original language description

This paper presents the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study results of integrated systems (ISs) and concepts of integrated systems of mixed municipal waste landfilling in the Czech Republic. Integrated systems of landfilling with the incineration of landfill gas in the flare, landfilling with the recovery of landfill gas were assessed. Environmental impact was evaluated using CML methodology. The functional unit chosen was a treatment of 1 t of mixed municipal waste (MMW). Data were collected in the CzechRepublic for incineration plants and landfills as well as abroad for the MBTs. Assessed ISs were modelled on the basis of available data and using the best available processes and data from LCA software. It was found that the integrated system of mixedmunicipal waste management (IS) Landfilling without energy recovery of landfill gas and Aerobic MBT have the highest environmental impact. On the contrary, the lowest environmental impact has ISs MBT biodrying. Overall assessment of ISs w
