Microbiology of bulking
Original language description
Activated sludge is separated from treated wastewater by gravity sedimentation in most wastewater treatment plants. The settling properties of activated sludge can be deteriorated be several separation problems. Activated sludge filamentous bulking is the most common separation problem. It is caused by an excessive growth of filamentous organisms. This chapter describes the properties of most common filamentous microorganisms and their identification techniques based on optical microscopy and FISH techniques. Basic control strategies of filamentous bulking are described together with practical examples. The control methods can be divided into tow major categories: i) specific methods base on growth kinetics and ecophysiology and ii) non-specific methods employing physical or chemical procedures like sludge weighting, chlorination, etc.
